Saxenda

Saxenda dosage — 0.6 mg to 3 mg explained

One step up each week to the 3 mg daily dose

Last reviewed: September 2026

Saxenda (liraglutide) is a once-daily injection. The FDA label starts you at 0.6 mg a day for one week, then raises the dose by 0.6 mg each week — 1.2 mg, 1.8 mg, then 2.4 mg — until you reach 3 mg a day from week 5 onward. The label describes the lower doses as titration only.

Your step-up schedule

The label sets out one dose increase a week for the first four weeks. The pen can deliver 0.6 mg, 1.2 mg, 1.8 mg, 2.4 mg or 3 mg.

  1. Week 10.6mg

The starting dose. The label uses it to reduce the stomach side effects that come with starting treatment, not to produce weight loss.

  2. Week 21.2mg

First step up. The label moves the dose by 0.6 mg at weekly intervals.

  3. Week 31.8mg

Second step up, again after one week at the previous dose.

  4. Week 42.4mg

The last titration step before the target dose.

  5. Week 5 onwards3mg

The recommended dosage for adults. The label says to stop Saxenda if 3 mg cannot be tolerated.

    Maximum dose

This is Table 1 of the FDA label (Dosage and Administration). If an increased dose is not tolerated, the label says to consider delaying escalation for about one additional week. In adults, the label says to review weight change 16 weeks after starting and to stop Saxenda if at least 4% of starting body weight has not been lost.

Starting dose vs maximum dose

The maximum dose is the highest approved dose — it is not the same as your maintenance dose.

Starting dose

0.6mg

Your first dose — the lowest to let your body adjust

Maximum dose

3mg

The highest approved dose — not everyone needs to reach it

For Saxenda these are not two ends of a range you can settle anywhere along. The FDA label says the recommended adult dosage is 3 mg daily and that the lower dosages are for titration only. It also says to stop Saxenda in adults who cannot tolerate 3 mg.

Weight loss at each dose

The label does not report weight loss by dose for Saxenda, so there is no dose-by-dose breakdown to show here. See what the trials found at the full dose →

When your doctor might change your dose

Your dosing is flexible and tailored to your needs.

The step up goes well

Move to the next dose after a week, following the label escalation table.

A step up is hard to tolerate

The label says escalation can be delayed for about one additional week.

More than 3 days without a dose

The label restarts Saxenda at 0.6 mg daily and repeats the escalation schedule.
